What is Holistic Massage

Here's just a small piece of the massage studies of my understanding. I am still exploring the subject and always find some new interesting knowledge!

The creative process instead of routine

The holistic approach I apply is creative and adaptive, so each time my clients would receive a different message based on their needs on the day we meet. I observe how a client’s body responds to the pressure and strokes then adapt the flow accordingly. In addition, I welcome my clients to alter their requests even already on the table. For example, perhaps you feel some tension on the lower back, and would like some attention there; however, soon you discover that actually, your legs are also tired from cycling - in which case feel free to bring it up, and I will do my best to accommodate the needs.

Holistic massages do not only focus on “fixing” the tight muscles, but a process of me, as a massage practitioner to engage a whole person to relax from the mind to the body. Therefore, each client is different, and the creative process of forming a unique massage for each person is the most important thing to me.

My approach

I wholeheartedly care about my clients, which gives them a deeper meaning of my massage. By listening during the initial little chats, I aim to create a suitable vibe and safe environment in the treatment room. For example, if the appointment is at the start of your day, and you wouldn’t want to feel sleepy after the massage, I can deliver a more energising and awakening rather than a calming session if that’s what you need.

Massage and stress response

Massages can help with reducing the stress level we hold in ourselves - and in modern society, we are constantly receiving a high level of stress inputs. We wake up with alarm which disrupts the sleep; travel to the workplace with traffic jams either driving or waiting for the public transports; lots of decision makings during work and even after with the life admins and errands to run.

These are affecting our sensory nerves and keep sending alert messages to our brains, thus our bodies have to react with a series of changes: muscles tensed up to be ready for actions, higher blood pressure and quickened breaths to bring more oxygen to the brain for thinking, and digestive system becomes sluggish in order to prioritise the energy to the previous activities.

The role of “Quality of Touch”

“Touch” is sensed by the skin - the biggest organ in the human body, that delivers the message back to the brain to say: “Get some rest!” By applying massage strokes, I hope to calm the over-working systems down by the quality of touch and activate your parasympathetic system which controls the “relaxing” functions of your body.

To sum up, this is why in holistic massage I engage each of my clients as a “whole” person. Because how we feel emotionally affects the body and vice versa. I offer to change this cycle a little in a positive way, even just half an hour, to remind you what the relaxing balance feels like for both your mind and body.
